It is not surprising that those involved with the $60mm+ in advertising by MoveOn.org would get involved in the Kerry campaign - who else would they support?

And yes, that is business as usual.

What's alarming here are the Kerry Campaign's efforts to silence the vets' speech. The Kerry campaign has made it clear: If you are among the 20 or so who were there and support him, please speak up. If you are among the 250+ who were there and are against him, we will threaten to sue the TV stations that air your ads while denouncing your book as false before it is even released.

If you protest at the DNC, please have a spot in this cage.
If you protest at the RNC, we respect your need to express yourself, feel free to shove Republican-looking women on their way to the theater and throw urine-filled balloons at the police.

It is business as usual, but not the way some think. So please think.

ANOTHER SUICIDE?

Former Navy Secretary John Lehman has no idea where a Silver Star citation displayed on Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry's campaign Web site came from, he said Friday. The citation appears over Lehman's signature. "It is a total mystery to me. I never saw it. I never signed it. I never approved it. And the additional language it contains was not written by me," he said.

Recall Admiral Boorda, who committed suicide in 1996 amid the controversy over his wearing a valor "V" pin on his chest? Newsweek was investigating whether Boorda was never officially awarded.

I suppose the media will act in such a way to prevent another suicide, but I am not so sure they will succeed.

THE WAR HERO THING

Many bloggers are thinking about the same thing, the golden rule of heroism: heros do not tout their heroism. I was thinking, by comparison, we learn this as boys: they who brag about gettin' it the most are gettin' it the least. With Kerry, maybe it's a northeastern liberal thing that I don't understand, or maybe it's perfectly clear that he, like Harkin and Cleland, has absolutely no class.

I can't remember where it's posted, but my eyebrows went up yesterday over a Bush-Kerry comparison in which the point was made that Kerry signed up with the Navy and was surprised to actually see the combat zone, but by contrast Bush became a pilot and actually requested to be with a unit that would see combat. Obviously these two were subject to the decisions of their superiors.

This is very, very believable - why would Bush become an F-102 fighter pilot, in wartime, if he didn't want to be like his fighter pilot father?

To the frustration of Bush supporters, we do not hear about this from George W. Bush, but that illustrates the rule. We wouldn’t hear about it from someone who is a would-be (vs. wanna-be) Vietnam hero and someone who has class.

A connect-o-chart (in pdf) was created at Blogs for Bush to illustrate the liberal 527's and their relationship to the Kerry Campaign.

Still, I thought:

"We need a regime change"
"Bring it on!"
"Help is on the way."

The Kerry campaign, like Kerry, continues to borrow others' ideas, remarks and slogans, an early clue to how not-smart they are: They should be smart enough to drop this argument.

Kerry's chart tells what? - that SBVT's are also Bush supporters? - and the Kerry campaign calls that shocking.

What concerns me is all this argument about history and who-was-where is taking attention away from the two main things: Kerry's betrayal in his 1971 Senate testimony, and his meeting with the Vietnamese communists in Paris.

Half of this country has forgotten the seriousness of having an enemy and meaning of the word enemy, which means half the country does not realize the seriousness of Kerry aiding the enemy.

What Kerry did AFTER Vietnam is far, far worse than any lies and exaggerations about his actual service. I read that and the first thing I thought of Paris giving honorary citizenship to Mumia, and now he endorses John Francois Kerry!

Mumia's endorsement doesn't so much matter to me. In a two-party system, the worst people on each side are going to be a source of embarassment to their endors-ees.

But there is still that "base" difference. The Democrats need their extremist base and do very much pander to them. Mumia's like-minded are in that base - hence Kerry's closed-fisted Black Power salute and Ter-ay-sa's vulgar demeanor.

To be clear: If a communist cop killer endorses one and a fascist grand dragon the other, neither side has a point.

Palestinians said such a weapon could be particularly unpleasant for devout Muslims since they cannot pray with clothes that smell and would have to throw them away.

NBC's soon-to-retire, preening, egocentric anchorman will not get to moderate the man from Texas:

that implication."

"Not once did candidates, campaigns or press critics suggest I was more concerned with my role than with the role of the candidates," Brokaw claimed.
"I am particularly outraged that the commission failed to choose anyone from NBC News personnel for a moderator's role."

Brokaw's parting shot: "For a commission that has assumed primary power in the exercise of the democratic process, you have a peculiarly autocratic style."

Iran warns of preemptive strike to prevent attack on nuclear sites

DOHA (AFP) - Iranian Defense Minister Ali Shamkhani warned that Iran might launch a preemptive strike against US forces in the region to prevent an attack on its nuclear facilities.

"We will not sit (with arms folded) to wait for what others will do to us..."

This is fascinating - American Democrats actually need to learn from the Iranain attitude.

"The US military presence (in Iraq) will not become an element of strength (for
Washington) at our expense. The opposite is true, because their forces would
turn into a hostage" in Iranian hands in the event of an attack, he said.

Memo to Iran: Carter is no longer in charge here.

Shamkhani, who was asked about the possibility of an American or Israeli strike
against Iran's atomic power plant in Bushehr, added: "We will consider any
strike against our nuclear installations as an attack on Iran as a whole, and we
will retaliate with all our strength.

Good - more dying in a blaze of glory. More martyrs. It beats getting stomped at the Hajj.

will not be able to launch any military operation without an American green
light. You cannot separate the two."

Odd - I thought that Israel controlled the US. After all, Iran gave a standing ovation to Mahathir's Jew-spit along the the 56 other nations. Indeed Iran is now looking more unilateral all the time.

A commander of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards was quoted in the Iranian press
earlier Wednesday as saying that Tehran would strike the Israeli reactor at
Dimona if Israel attacks the Islamic republic's own burgeoning nuclear
facilities.

I don't want to steal the slogan Kerry stole from Bush, but 'Bring it on!"

Iran insists that its nuclear intentions are peaceful, while pointing at its enemy's alleged nuclear arsenal, which Israel neither confirms nor denies possessing.

I actually wonder... if they told that to Jimmy Carter, would he believe tham? I think he would, which means then that the NYT would.

He also warned that Iran would consider itself no longer bound by its
commitments to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in the event of an
attack.

Oh - so they are committed. Well, we don't even need Carter. But I predict they are going to fake this attack.

The
Islamic republic has agreed to temporarily suspend uranium enrichment pending
the completion of the IAEA probe, but is working on other parts of the fuel
cycle and has recently resumed making centrifuges used for enrichment.

Why would this suspension make a difference? If this enrichment is for peaceful purposes, for generating power, then why delay? Too bad for Iran that North Korea already answered that question.

WORD OF THE DAY: HYPERTRICHOSIS

People with hypertrichosis are hirsute.

You may recall the photo of the hirsute NASCAR fan who shaved the #3 on his back, who clearly had hypertrichosis, also known as polytrichia and hirsutism.

My cashier at Greenlife Grocery yesterday was hirsute, but did not have hypertrichosis, which means that even while hirsute, she still did not really have hirsutism.

The article linked below documents a hypertrichosic Chinese. In his case, his hirsutism is due to atavism, a fascinating genetic throwback to ancient, remote ancestors.

relationship between New Jersey's gay governor and the man reported to have been his lover with a new name being added to the mix, that of former FBI Director Louis Freeh. When Gov. Gov. James E. McGreevey appointed Golan Cipel, an Israeli citizen, to the highly sensitive job of advising the governor on homeland security for the state it raised eyebrows. The job paid $110,000 a year and Cipel, a poet, had no qualifications in either security or terrorism. Now it has been learned that in giving Cipel the job McGreevey rejected a deal worked out by his own administration to give the job to Freeh. The former FBI Director had offered to serve McGreevey without a salary, the Newark Star Ledger reports.

So Louis Freeh offered protection for free, but the Gov chose to pay the poet $110,000 instead. Perhaps the Governor erred in comparing it to the free protection offered in the night clubs, it just seems better to pay for protection. If you dance the dance… you gotta pay the piper!

RESIGNED - WHY, EXACTLY?

I woke up to NPR announcing that New Jersey Governor James McGreevey admitted he is gay and announced his resignation effective November 15. They gave a fairly balanced story, except for how they opened it up -

- even on radio, America gets its news from the headlines more than the body of the story.

But yesterday I read better coverage of the apology from the Governor himself: that he had not only broken his vows but had made the office of the Governor vulnerable to blackmail.

There is great news here - an elected Democrat leader understands that breaking those vows is serious business, but there more! Recall Linda Tripp and her infamous recording... what if that tape ended up in the hands of, say, the Chinese and blackmailed a President whose administration already thought it was a good idea to allow China to have a beefier nuclear arsenal. They might have Taiwan by now (and Tripp might be long dead and underreported).

The suspicions of corruption and Governor McGreevey are reported, but the much-missed point is the vulnerability of the office.

Emergency workers had to remove some sliding glass doors and lift the couch, with Grinds still on it, to a trailer behind a pickup truck. Removing her from the couch would be too painful, since her body was grafted to the fabric. After years of staying put, her skin had literally become one with the sofa and had to be surgically
removed.

Too bad this couldn't have waited until after the two hurricanes blow through.

A Pakistani citizen who allegedly took videotapes of skyscrapers in six
U.S. cities, a Texas dam, and various public transportation systems has been
charged with a immigration violations and jailed in North Carolina. Kamran
Akhtar ... was nabbed last month by Charlotte cops after he we was spotted
filming office buildings there. Akhtar, a 35-year-old New York City resident
also known as Kamran Shaikh, allegedly made "materially false statements" when
questioned by state and federal investigators following his July 20 detention
(details of the bust were detailed today by prosecutors, who released the below
affidavit sworn by Homeland Security agent John Scott Sherrill). According to
cops, Akhtar behaved suspiciously when an officer asked about his videotaping
and gave conflicting accounts as to why he was filming the skyscrapers.

Feel free to scream "racism" in the comment section. It will be really interesting to see if the films were primarily of the bases of the structures.

NPR reported that Akhtar's filming included the Governor's Mansion in Austin. Well! - it seems that the Americans aren't the only ones dealing with four year-old information these days.

Memo to Akhtar: Bush don't live there no more, and while the Texas Capitol looks a lot like the US Capitol...

PLAYING GAMES WITH DEMOCRACY

Jonah Goldberg echos some of my thoughts about the Keyes candidacy:

Except for the pesky fact that the Keyes candidacy is the latest example of
a disturbing trend in which both parties are overturning the norms of democracy,
with help from the media. Just in the last few years we've seen a dead man
(dubiously) elected out of sympathy in Missouri, so that his widow could get a
Senate seat as consolation. In New Jersey, Democrats were able to yank Bob
Torricelli off the ballot after the deadline, knowing he would lose. In
California, Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected governor because the voters wanted
a do-over. In Texas, Republicans violated the longstanding tradition of
redistricting only once a decade. And, of course, in 2000 Hillary Clinton won
her vanity campaign in New York as a carpetbagger. And, while I think there's a
lot of liberal myth-making about the Florida recount, there's no denying the
event undermined many Americans' faith in the system.

I do recall, however, the California thing was a legal recall, and the first one to ever work.

IS KERRY ON DRUGS?

Meanwhile, his opponent in the presidential race, Sen. John Kerry, criticized
Bush's performance in the immediate aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks

This may be a reference to his remaining in the classroom in Sarasota. Anyone who understands the Presidency would know that his security told him to sit still until they determined what to do while under attack.

( The magazine cover image of Bush standing with the NYC fire chief on the WTC rubble is an image most Americans will associate with the immediate aftermath of the 9-11 events. )

Indymedia types called Bush a chicken for not going straight to DC. (These are the guys who called Pat Tillman a "dumb jock" after he was killed in action, and posted an article blaming the Bali bombing on the Jews.) DC was under attack. You don't send heads of state to attack zones.

It's obvious why there was no rush out of the Sarasota classroom, and why the book title Unfit for Command takes on even more meaning.

The White House gave the same answer it did to Enron : no. - HA!

He just said something about re-opening old wounds - how many times did this guy remind us of his six years in the Hanoi Hilton? The rebuttal: six years as a prisoner of war does not automatically qualify one for the Presidency.

What do you bet these are the same guys who sued to keep military absentee-ballots from getting counted in Florida in 2000?

The letter claims the ad is "false" and "libelous" and suggests, in
not-so-subtle terms, that TV stations should use their "legal authority" to
refuse any requests for advertising airtime, stating that "because your station
has this freedom [to refuse the ad], and because it is not a 'use' of your
facilities by a clearly identified candidate, your station is responsible for
the false and libelous charges made by this sponsor".

Oh really?
That's a great idea - tell the media what they cannot air. That should only want to make the public stay tuned for the commercials.

TWO MORE DOWN

CBS online reports the arrests of two would-be terrorists in Albany, NY.

With an idea borrowed from today's Ann Coulter column... WWDRD? - what would Dan Rather do with this story? - perhaps:

"Yassim Muhhidin Aref, 34, Imam of the Majid Al Salam mosque; and Mohammed
Mosharref Hoosain, 49, founder of the mosque , stepped aside today as advisers
to Albany's Muslim community. CBS News National Security Correspondent David
Martin reports this was triggered by a carefully orchestrated leak about the
men, and the timing of it appears to be no coincidence."

Little Green Footballs yesterday exposed what the Muslim discussion forum called SoundVision would have done if the two mosqued-men had actually aquired their shoulder-launch missile kit. They have Dear-Johns for each Muslim congregation to send to their local media.

LGF, in one of the best closing remarks I have seen, ices it with the observation:

Please notice: these prefab statements are intended to be
used after a terror attack.

Perhaps he asked for it, his explanation makes sense but it still comes closer to offensive than using the word "niggardly" to describe a frugal person.

How about this headline? - "Imam and mosque founder's terror-related activity angers Arab community"

That link will get you nowhere because, at the time of this post, the headline does not exist. Will SoundVision provide a Dear-John for the foiled terror plots?
